Contemporary classroom aspires to develop 21st century-skills in the learners, where science and mathematics play pivotal roles. In doing so, teachers plan certain questions to get specific learning outcomes in mathematics. Word problems in mathematics have always been a challenge to the learners as instead of mathematical notations, the logic is hidden inside the text. Hence, solving word problems is a skill in itself. This skill will be best developed by problem solving strategy as word problems are closely linked to real life situations. The psychological considerations, understanding student mentality and critical and design thinking skills using teaching tools to solve the word problems in mathematics have been discussed here.
